Detectives at Special Investigations Unit (SIU) yesterday interrogated Mr Mathias Mpuuga, the coordinator of the banned Activists for Change pressure group, for more than six hours on allegations of incitement of violence and treason.
The interrogation follows an interview with Mr Mpuuga titled “Our goal is to bring Museveni down” that was carried in the Sunday Monitor of April 8, 2012.
A police source, who preferred anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the press, said a new charge of treason was added later while interrogating Mr Mpuuga.
Mr Mpuuga, also the Masaka Municipality MP, appeared at the SIU in Kireka at 10am but was released at around 4:30pm.

Police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said Mr Mpuuga was just helping them in their investigations. “We wanted him to help us with the investigation into incitement of violence (on Friday) but did not appear but sent to us his lawyers from Lukwago and Company Advocates that he would be able to appear today (Monday),” Mr Mugenyi said.
According to the Penal Code Act, Section 83, a person convicted of incitement of violence is imprisoned for term not exceeding 14 years while treason is punished by life imprisonment.

Mr Mpuuga, who talked to Daily Monitor after his release, confirmed the addition of treason on the file. “There was nothing new they asked me. They wanted me to tell them what I meant in my interview with this newspaper. But I told them that I did not go to school to interpret things for the police,” Mr Mpuuga said.
Mr Fred Mirondo, the head of Media and Police Department, Mr Charles Kataratambi, Ruth Ninsiima and one Balab interrogated the legislator. Mr Mirondo also summoned Daily Monitor reporter Risdel Kasasira whose byline was carried on the article to appear at SIU for interrogation.
Mr Kasasira is expected to appear at SIU this Friday.
